Common Questions

Why isn't my web page showing up?
Make sure you know the address to your web page and that your beginning page is always named index.html
User pages are named as follows:

If your username is banana - then this would be your address http://www.infowest.com/personal/b/banana/index.html
The part following "personal/" is then followed by the first letter of your username then your full username.

It's All In The Name
The most common problem with web pages is how they are named. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you use all lowercase letters in naming directories and files. For example, use "/pictures/mypictures.html" instead of "/PICTURES/MyPictures.HTML". Another good rule of thumb is to make sure you don't use any spaces in the names of either folders or files. Following both of these rules will usually cut out 80%-90% of all your Error 404 problems. (error 404 explained later)

What does Error 403 mean?
Error 403 means that access to a file or directory is forbidden. You will not be able to see the file or any of the files in the directory. Check the URL you typed, you probably are trying to access a directory that does not exist, or is not your own. For more information on the 403 error, see this page.

What does Error 404 mean?

This means that the file you are looking for isn't where the web address says it is or might not be on the server at all. This type of error is probably the most common. You have probably either mispelled part of the address, or you have mixed upper and lower-case letters. For example:
http://www.infowest.com/personal/t/test/family.jpg
http://www.infowest.com/personal/t/test/Family.jpg

Although these look similar a web server or browser sees these as two different addresses.

Why can't I use FrontPage Extensions or any other Scripting / Programming?

InfoWest strives to meet our customers needs. As both an ISP and a hosting company we have to balance the amount of risk we can accept. Since we are an ISP first and foremost our devotion is more toward keeping our dial up customers extrememly secure. In doing that our web services are somewhat limited. There are workarounds and small changes that can be made to almost any web site in order for it to work on our servers in a secure manner.

We do not support Microsoft FrontPage extensions due to numerous and serious compatibility and security problems it can create for other users and the server in general. We may offer FrontPage extentions in the future on enhanced accounts on more secure servers.

PHP: InfoWest does offer PHP programming and scripting through its design firm www.ngenuity.com We do not, however, offer PHP scripting capabilities to the customers themselves. PHP is basically a program that runs on the server. It can, like any other program, crash. PHP usually crashes due to bad programming or bad code. If PHP happens to crash on our server it not only makes the website that crashed it go down, but all of our other customers that use PHP would go down as well. Ngenuity.com can program a variety of things in PHP for your website and allow it to be hosted on InfoWest. for more information please call 435-674-0165

CGI, and Others: InfoWest does realize the widespread use of CGI and other scripting languages and does not want to discourage people from using them. Like PHP, we cannot allow arbitrary CGI code to run on the shared server. We do offer some limited forms of CGI in the form of a postmail script and a counter. If you have a CGI you would like to run, we can review the script for security problems and post it for you.

InfoWest does offer most of these basic web services for free. InfoWest does provide support beyond this web page for a consultation fee. Each request is handled on a case by case basis, with a minimum fee of $20.00.
As always there are exceptions and if you feel you have a question that most people need help with please send it in here. webhelp@infowest.com
