Uploading Your Website With Crystal FTP

Configuration of Crystal FTP

This is a screenshot of the actual interface you will see when you open up Crystal FTP click the picture above for a larger view

I will walk you through how to setup FTP to InfoWests server and configure it to upload your files to your folder.

Step 1. (if you havent already downloaded and installed Crystal FTP click here to download it)
Click the "New Site" button what this does is create the computer like logo in the window above it. Once that logo is made click on it and we will fill in the information it needs to connect to the server.

Step 2.
Here is where you need to assign your website a name, it doesnt really matter what it is, its for your reference and has no bearing whatsoever to the server or the website.

Step 3.
This is where you put in the FTP address to the server you are uploading your files too. In this case its always going to be ftp.infowest.com (always in lowercase)

Step 4.
This is where you type in your username, its usually your username you use to log onto the internet with.

Step 5.
This is where you type in your password, its usually your password you use to log onto the internet with.

Step 6.
This is where it starts to get a little tricky, I have listed in that screenshot /web I suggest you leave it exactly like that unless you understand that what your looking at is a remote directory and how to move around in that.

Step 7.
Before you hit the "Connect" buttton please make sure your computer is hooked up and connected to the internet.

Uploading and Downloading Files once your Connected

I have numbered this one a little differently than the first one to explain the different fields and what each one does.

1. This side of the screen is showing you your local computer, just like Windows Explorer, you can browse it and search your hard drive off this side, Ideally you want to know where your webpage files or pictures are that you want to upload to your website. Go ahead and find those first before you start any of the other steps.

2. This side of the screen is showing the files and directories that are on the infowest server, its hard drive if you will. Notice there are two folders there, The top one should be your username, and depending on whether or not you have a domain name you will see a second folder called www.your-domian-name.com. To open either of the folders just double click it as you would in windows.

3. This part of the screen is showing whats going on between your computer and the server, dont really worry about following what it says or what it shows unless you are having trouble uploading or downloading, if you are, then the errors will be listed in this box.

4. This part of the screen shows the files that are currently being uploaded or downloaded. It will show what percentage they are in the transfer and how much longer the transfer should take.

Now that I have explained each of the windows we can move onto uploading and downloading the actual files.

1. The first step is to find the files in window #1 that you want to upload to the server.

2. The second step is to get into the directory on the server that you want to be in (window #2) be it your personal folder or your domain name folder, to get inside the folder please double click on the folder icon.

3. This is the easiest part, click on the file you want to upload in window #1 and drag it over to window #2 and let it go. That should upload the file directly to the personal or domain name folder. Once a file is uploaded you can immediatly see it on the web.

4. To download a file reverse the process of #3 and it should download a file to your computer.
